Making Your Body Type Rock

Dos and don'ts for different body shapes

For each of the three different body shapes below, we have a list of 5 dos and don'ts. But remember: Each woman is different, so the advice may not apply to your particular case.

By Julie Chaumont, LOULOU Web Editor-in-chief

The first piece of advice applies to all women: Wear the size that actually fits! Many full-figured women try to hide their ample curves with clothes that are one or two sizes too big, but this only makes them look larger. At the other extreme, some women wear clothes that are too small, believing this will make them look thinner. In fact, tight clothes can have the opposite effect by exaggerating certain body parts. In the end, it's always best to buy clothes that are the right size for YOU.

Pear shape

  • Balance out your body shape with straight-cut or slightly flared skirts and pants.
  • Avoid tops that come right to the waist, as this draws attention to that part of your body. Instead, choose tops that end slightly higher or a little lower.
  • Accentuate your upper body with tight-fitting tops. Avoid over-sized, shapeless blouses, as these will only make your hips look bigger.
  • Draw attention to your upper torso by wearing eye-catching accessories.
  • Stock up on brightly coloured or patterned tops that focus attention on your upper torso and balance out your body shape.
Apple shape
  • Avoid tight-fitting tops, since these only emphasize the fullness of your figure.

  • Wear slim-fitting - but not tight-fitting! - skirts that set off your best asset: your legs.
  • Stock your wardrobe with V-necks, since these lengthen your neck and your overall body shape.
  • Rather than wearing belts that cut the body in half, opt instead for belts that match the colour of your pants or top and blend into your outfit.
  • Stock up on this season's extra-long tops and sweaters: They lengthen your overall body shape, draw attention to your lower torso and camouflage your midriff area.

Hourglass shape

  • Emphasize your slender waist with large or flashy belts.

  • Look for waist-length tops that draw attention to one of your best features.
  • Choose straight-cut skirts and pants.
  • Avoid all loose-fitting clothing; choose slim-fitting items that flatter your figure.
  • Stock up on belted jackets, ballet tops and any other styles that accentuate the waist.

The golden rule

More important than all this advice is the one rule every woman should follow: Learn how to accentuate your best assets. For example, if your cleavage could put Monica Bellucci's to shame, wear the kinds of sweaters - V-neck or boat-neck - that will enhance it. If your legs are your best feature, wear A-line skirts that end just above the knee and flashy high heels to draw attention to that part of your body.

Remember: Whatever you wear, nothing beats a self-confident attitude and a dazzling smile!
